What Is 80G Income Tax Deduction ?

Therefore Donation Made Above Rs.1000/- Is Eligible to 50% Income Tax Exemption Under Section 80G The various donations specified in section 80G are eligible for deduction up to either 100% or 50% with or without restriction as provided in section 80G. The exemption is calculated by reducing the donated amount from your taxable salary. For instance, if your taxable income per year is Rs 200,000 and you make a donation of Rs 5,000 then your net taxable income will become Rs 1,97,500. Your tax will now be calculated on this new amount basis the prevailing tax rates.

Who Can Claim 80G ?

This deduction can be claimed by any tax payer -individuals, company, firm or any other person. 

In-kind contributions such as food material, clothes, medicines etc do not qualify for deduction under section 80G.

What is the minimum amount that needs to be donated to get a 50% tax exemption?

A minimum of Rs 1000 needs to be donated to avail of 50% tax exemption under IT sec 80G. This deduction can only be claimed when the contribution has been made via cheque or draft or in cash. But deduction is not allowed for donations made in cash exceeding Rs 10,000. In-kind contributions such as food material, clothes, medicines etc do not qualify for deduction under section 80G.
